Ugly Tax Machine

Right now I’m thinking readers are scratching their heads and wondering exactly what the heck kind of people we have with their hands all over this City right now, running it into the ground?  Our property taxes are ridiculously sick, our school taxes are incredibly painful, our home values are dropping like it’s hot, and some of our candidates, along with their Wylie old school pals, want to keep it all the same.

What exactly is their vested interest in getting a questionable character like Nathan Scott and a 3 time past loser like Gilbert Tamez on council?  I’ve pondered this multiple times and I truly believe it is because Nathan Scott and Gilbert Tamez will give Council exactly what Red Byboth gives Council: another spend and tax vote.  The ultimate non-dissent.  When thinking on that a little further, I wonder why is it so important to this old school Wylie crowd to keep our City Machine status quo?  The only reason I can come up with is because Mayor Eric Hogue has been voting that way since he got in office in 2008.  It certainly isn’t because they have been making sound decisions.  That is pretty clear by looking at where our budget is, where our tax rate is, and what amenities we have compared to other similar communities.  In fact, with Mayor Eric Hogue, unless there is alcohol involved, he has never been on the losing side of any vote in all his years as Mayor.  Never.  His votes have always been in favor of spending and taxing.  Well isn’t that special.

Why is this election so incredibly delicate for Mayor Eric Hogue and why is the Pastor/Preacher supporting someone with such a questionable background, someone who lied to the public about voting, and who clearly does not have his anger under control yet?  Think on it a minute.  Heaven forbid the fence perching Hogue have to change his stance should the majority suddenly go the way of cutting spending.  I mean, what sort of a flaming idiot would Mayor look like if he abruptly started voting with a new majority for all the things he has voted against in the past?

Yep, you heard that right, ‘new majority’.  That is the lie being spread around town anyway, that there is going to be some sort of fictitious ‘new majority’ should Nathan Scott and Gilbert Tamez not make it on council.  Well if you expect to see a Goss, Butschek, Jones, Culver vote on cutting taxes and cutting spending then yes I suppose there would be a consensus, but as far as any other vote goes, I suspect they are going to be all over the place as they have been in the past.  This mistruth being spread about town by the old school Wylie crowd is another prime example of a scare tactic being put out by the Good Old Boy camp who are supporting Nathan Scott and Gilbert Tamez because they are terrified of losing control of the city.  In fact, they want the voters to think that THEIR majority vote never existed and that they never used their foursome muscle to beat the crap out of the three conservatives on council on every vote that involved fiscal accountability.  It’s as if THAT never happened.  It’s as if those years of Councilman David Goss taking it in the gut as the others committed group thuggery never occurred.  Interesting.

In my opinion, Catherine Butschek’s .04 cent tax cut is a bit precocious at this stage of the budget game.  However if her ultimate goal is to reduce our taxes by that amount say, over 4 years then I could understand it, but to go for gold in one swoop simply isn’t going to happen.  As savvy voters, we know that. As savvy voters, we know it will take time to right-size our City tax rate and we are willing to be patient about it, even if the relief comes in $14.11 increments every year for many years.  You see, we are smart like that.  Besides, proposing such a large dump in taxes next budget would likely give City Manager Mindy Manson a coronary, Mayor Eric Hogue would have a sweaty, red-faced conniption, and frankly I can’t see Councilmembers Culver, Goss, or Jones supporting that drastic of a cut in taxes in one budget season.  Nope, it’s not gonna happen.

That said, Butshek’s idea is a good one because she has indeed listened to the people and despite what the Alicia White’s, Nathan Scott’s, Gilbert Tamez’s and the Earl Newsom’s of the world say, the majority of people in Wylie are sick to death of our ridiculous tax rate and the lies and deceit being spread about cutting police and fire protection in order to lower it.  If the public is buying into that alarmist nonsense, then they are buying into the same old rhetoric being spewed by every liberal out there.  This rhetoric ignores the simple and effective idea of cutting spending.  Heaven forbid anyone in the old school Wylie even entertain that idea.

I’ll say it again because it is so critical at this very moment.  Cut spending.  Now there’s a novel new idea.  For Wylie, it can and should be done, especially in conjunction with the new retail sales tax we are about to begin raking in with even more shopping and a movie theatre.  Oh and nobody even mentioned the taxes we’ll rake in on a new medical center/hospital.

I am convinced without a doubt, that there is enough waste that can be cut which, in conjunction with the increasing sales tax revenue, can free up the funds needed to provide a .01 cent tax break each year over 4 years.  There is enough that can be cut to provide funds for the Police Chief to hire at least 4 new officers a year over 4 years.  There will be enough to provide stepped pay increases to the employees over the next 4 years.  There is enough to be cut that can afford us to set aside funds for two quints over the next 4 years and pay cash for them rather than leverage them because in all reality, we do not actually need a 4th fire station.  In four years at 200 new housing starts a year, we can be right were we need to be with the budget and finished with this abject mis-management that has taken place over the last 10 or more years.  Cut spending and make purchases fit in the budget through measured planning in order to lower the tax rate for the people, and refusing to take on more debt which will ultimately increase our taxes.  Though Nathan Scott would have you believe that leveraging equipment is always a preferable plan to paying cash. I disagree.  According to him, taking on debt and paying it back with interest is always preferable to paying with cash.  Now there’s some sound financial planning for you.

My list of items can all be done but it requires cutting spending in other areas, something the City claims they did when they asked their departments to scale back their budgets 20%.  To that I say, is that all?

Since 2008 the City has not cut much if any fat out of the budget.  Oh, they did away with the music in the park stuff, but they might as well have done away with that anyway. Truthfully it was not a very large crowd draw as hardly any people showed up for those events.  I know, I was at them.  The only deal that was a potential money maker was the July Jubilee and at least they were smart enough to keep that one.

Yet during that time since 2008 when they should have been seriously downsizing, is when the bulk of our retail sales tax started to come online in Wylie, most particularly in the past 2 years.  Would that not be a fair assessment? I believe it is.

What that means is that our Wylie City Council has given us a bad case of goesinta and goesouta at mutually increasing levels.  Meanwhile they tossed out a few cursory cutbacks to appear as if the City was actually doing something and actually scaling back.  Do you recall the newspaper article a couple years ago about them lamenting cutting the Music in the Park?  Yes, I was at one concert where there were probably 40-50 people and I wondered if this was a concert put on specifically for our city leaders and their families because there was hardly anyone else there.

In fact, it makes me laugh every time Mayor Eric Hogue stands up at a political event and tells attendees that Wylie is a group of citizens who truly get involved in their city and care.  Then I take a quick look at the 40-50 people in attendance and the 600-700 who vote out of 43,000 citizens and I wonder how he can truly state that with a straight face.

In all fairness, let’s run the Nathan Scott and Gilbert Tamez gauntlet then, shall we?  Let’s pretend we believe these two boobs and buy into their bond rhetoric.  Let’s pretend the 600 people who come out to vote put these tiddlywink mentalities in place and they decide a bond is the only way for us to pay for all the things that Mayor and Council want.  Now let’s say the public is actually stupid enough to approve a bond that comes to vote.  Ultimately the bond increases our taxes because someone will have to pay for the interest on the building of a new fire station number four along with two ¾ million dollar quints and all the other equipment necessary to set up shop. Oh heavens and we haven’t even discussed how we are going to fill that fire station with personnel.  Will our Police Chief continue to suffer at the hands of our Fire Captain, who keeps getting the sweet deals?  I mean look at the Taj Mahal on Brown, then look at the old City Hall our police have.  Is that the 4th fire station we have to look forward to building with a bond?

What will we have to show for our .92 cent tax which we will ultimately hit because Mayor Eric Hogue wants us there, as he tells us that all the time, and because there will be no other way to pay for these items if our council continues spending the way they spend, refusing to cut anything, continuing to give funds to non-profits that come with their hands out, approving low-income housing, painting water towers, and patching alleyways, approving handing over a rather large building to an exclusive group of seniors which will ultimately stand empty and not pay for itself because they don’t collect dues. All this while our property values continue to plummet (in the past year from $153K to $141K).

Our tax rate is already ridiculously and unproportionately high compared to every other city in North Texas.  Don’t you ever wonder how the other communities make ends meet?  In a dream world, even if our tax rate stayed the same and we used the increasing tax revenue to cover the fire station requirements, what will we have to show for it all then?  We will have 4 fire stations with no personnel and if personnel are shuffled around then what the hell was our need in building a 4th station then?  (At 200 or less new housing starts a year we don’t have a real need for a 4th fire station just yet, by the way.)  Meanwhile we will have a ridiculously understaffed police department by our current lack of 16 officers.  We will have a City Hall that the citizens think is butt ugly and a Rec Center that continues to lose money year after year.  We will have a huge Senior Center that about 70 people routinely visit and which sits empty every night and doesn’t make any revenue to help offset the cost.  Our median home value will decrease to some ridiculously low rate like $136K, bringing with it a sea of foreclosures because nobody can get out of their house when they can’t even sell it for scrap wood.  Yup, our leaders is smart in Wylie and we keep putting them thar smart people up thar in office.

Is this the City of Wylie’s plan to lower our taxes?  They devalue our property so much it lowers our tax outgo.  Oh I see, they must be getting some really sound financial advice from an uber savvy financial advisor.

Don’t you see the ridiculousness of those statements?  If our Council refuses to cut spending, rather keeping spending in line with incoming tax revenue as they have been in the past, and we approve a bond, they will have no choice but to increase our taxes in order to pay for it.  This is what you are voting for in this election.  THIS is why the seniors, whose tax rate is frozen by the way, and the Good Old Boys on council and behind the scenes are quaking in their boots, even supporting a man who does not have his temper in check, who struck his own wife and was arrested, and who yelled at his opponent in the Candidate Forum just the other night.  Ask yourself WHY are they supporting that and you will probably come to the same conclusion I have.

The Wylie tax machine is ugly and it is being run by some lackluster people who are unwilling to cut spending.  They want you to vote in more of the same.  They think paying for it all is our problem, as taxpayers, and as our fine Mayor Eric Hogue pointed out at the last City Council meeting, our tax rate is supposed to be even higher, so we should be bowing and kissing his ring in favor.  I don’t know about you, but I’m so over this Mayor and the Gang of Four on this council and where they are taking our City.  If we wanted to be pickpocketed by a congenial guy and his pals, we might just as easily have voted in Mayor McCheese, Ronald McDonald, Grimace, Officer Big Mac, Captain Crook, Birdie the Early Bird, and the Hamburglar.

Queen of Mean

Heavens to Betsy I cannot stand going to that rag, the Wylie View and reading the nonsense that takes place there.  I avoid it like the plague because it's nothing more than a playground for internet bullies.  However I heard today that there was some sort of silliness and misinformation being spread on there and that Alicia White, wife of City Councilman Rick White, the Administrator of that board was tossing good names of good people under the bus yesterday.  In light of this, I decided it might be time for a Befuddled Award to be granted.

Yesterday from the Wylie Spew http://forums.wylieview.com/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=85503
and its head spewstress Alicia White:

by Alicia on Fri Apr 27, 2012 8:32 am
A lot of people are asking why I am supporting Nathan Scott and Gilbert Tamez for Wylie city council. I have many reasons and here is one:

In September last year, Councilman Bennie Jones, along with Diane Culver and David Goss, opposed the city manager’s request to give city employees a one-time 2% salary incentive. Just recently the school board trustees passed a one-time 3% salary incentive for WISD employees. Bennie Jones didn’t speak out against this request in any form; he didn’t go to the meeting nor write a letter of opposition. I don’t understand why he would oppose providing city employees this incentive but be okay with WISD giving a larger incentive. Imagine how the city employees must feel about this imbalance.

Actually, I found it interesting that there was NO citizen opposition on this motion. Not even city council members Diane Culver or David Goss. The irony here is that Goss’ wife, Barbara who is a WISD trustee, voted in favor of the incentive. I applaud her for not making the same mistake as her husband.

I also have to wonder where council candidate Catherine Butschek was. She didn’t speak out against this incentive, and she should have since her platform is to lower property taxes. The thing is, school taxes are almost twice as high as the city taxes! Why wasn’t Catherine speaking out in opposition against the WISD incentive? Why isn’t she at school board meetings opposing WISD for giving employee salary increases when our city employees are going on four years without any salary increase? If Catherine wants to lower taxes, she should be fair. She needs to pay attention to WISD’s spending as well.

I am disappointed that I cannot support Catherine because she supported Rick wholeheartedly when he ran for council. I am so thankful for her and Matthew’s assistance; however, I feel I must share my thoughts. I kept silent last year about a candidate and I regret it to this day.

Thanks for reading and if you have any questions feel free to PM me.
Nathan Scott and Gilbert Tamez for Wylie City Council 2012!

Can I just start off by saying that Catherine Butschek is not running for Wylie ISD, she is running for Wylie City Council.  For some reason people keep claiming that the City has something to do with the school district.  It doesn't.  Um, hello?  Her opinion as a candidate is irrelevant with regard to any decisions the ISD makes because there is no apples to apples comparison between the two.

I highlighted the pertinent information in Alicia's diatribe because it shows the lengths that woman will go to in order to get more puppets on the Wylie City Council.  Again, the woman who claims to be factual and ethical is spreading misinformation to the intellectually corrupt and morally bankrupt Wylie View crowd, who favor her as their special queen of mean.  If she had actually looked back at the meeting minutes from the vote on the 2% bonus last year, she would have noticed that the vote was 7/0 FOR the bonus to the City of Wylie employees.  She would have seen that Councilmembers Culver, Goss, and Jones all voted in support of the bonus. Why does she want people to believe they voted against it?

She would rather you not know that and spread her lies in order to get two more puppets on council.  Well of course she would support Nathan Scott and Gilbert Tamez because they are puppets in the land of the Good Old Boys just like her own husband.  All one need do is look at the list of Good Old Boys supporting each other.

So what's with the misinformation she is spreading? Doesn’t she talk to her husband?  I mean, is there no communication in the White household whatsoever?  One might think that if there were any semblance of communication between, he might have corrected her on this matter.  Well, then again, if you have ever been on the receiving end of her verbal slaps, I suppose there is no correcting a hothead in the moment.  Then again communication might be difficult with her as I watched her head disappear before the second her mouth opened, as happened when she started yelling at the workshop on the employee bonuses last year.  Her ilk clapped and looked on behind her.  Gee, I guess I can see now why she is supporting Nathan Scott, the hothead who yelled and lost his temper at the Candidate Forum last Thursday.  You know, two peas in a pod sort of thing.

Of course the Queen of Mean doesn’t stop there.  Oh no.  She has to toss Wylie ISD Trustee Barbara Goss under the bus too.  Alicia’s point was wrong about Councilman David Goss’ vote.  Alicia’s point was wrong about Councilman Bennie Jones’ vote.  Alicia’s point was wrong about Councilwoman Diane Culver’s vote.  Which makes whatever point she was attempting to make when she ultimately smeared the beautiful and intelligent Barbara Goss invariably null and void as well.  So what the hell was the purpose of Alicia White’s post on the Wylie Spew again?

Oh yes, to spread misinformation rather than the truth and when she was called out on it she has refused to write a correction.  Would that were someone else on the WV, she would have ridiculed them for not posting a correction. Rather, she gets a pass.

Alicia would have been better served to go have a looksee at those Council minutes and see just how that vote went down before she piped up with false information.  You see, this is precisely the reason I give my readers links and copies of text, so they can verify the information themselves rather than take my word as factual. If someone gives me data that proves I was wrong, then I will post a correction as in the case of the early voting schedule.  If I tell the readers something I heard as rumor or something I feel, I state it that way too so they can decide for themselves what they think about it.  There is more than one way to verify something and I have always found that when people talk, they tell things to more than one person, so if I heard it, there is a good chance someone else did too.  You would think the woman would have learned to check her facts by now. Tsk, tsk, tsk.

Is it any wonder that misinformation is being spread and fine people are being tossed under the bus from a group of people who think that those who are currently running our city and have run it in the past are squeaky clean?  That's is about as akin to saying, "I did not inhale" and, "I did not have sex with that woman."  As usual, Alicia White has turned off handfuls of people with a ridiculous rant, thus a Befuddled Award has been granted.

Making the Liberals Look Conservative

You know how some people say something is fan-freaking-tastic?  We can fit those descriptive words into just about any phrase.  We can even turn the F-bomb into a noun, verb, adjective, and even an adverb.  Hells I can even turn it into a pronoun.  Tonight’s Wylie City Council Candidate Debate put on by the Wylie News was un-freaking-believable.

Jesus, Lord, help us.  I don’t even have to refer back to my notes to tell you my predictions of last night came true.  Gilbert Tamez babbled like a baboon, Catherine Butshek blabbed on at a high rate of speed at times, Nathan Scott needs to be mindful of his mindfulness, and Bennie Jones even got a bit rattled when addressing cutting taxes by repeating, “It’s going to be really hard.”  All in all, the candidates turned out to answer all of the questions as I thought they would, well all except for Nathan Scott.  His answers were not the devil’s advocate sort, they were just plain devilish.

It seems Nathan Scott couldn’t help but smile and stare at me every time a question was asked that he thought I submitted.  Does it matter if I asked the question or not?  What was the point of staring at me and smiling?  Did he really want to play that game?  Mr. Scott, you got it wrong, not all of those questions were mine darlin’.  What an arrogant pud.

Gilbert is a left leaner.  Yup, that’s pretty clear. He’s all about his Democrat roots. He’s all about spending and leaving the tax rate the same.  Gilbert Tamez thinks the City can buy the Corps of Engineers property around Lake Lavon.  Uh, wrong answer.  You can’t buy that property, they will lease it to you but you can’t buy it from them. Duh.  He stated over and over again that we will lose police and fire and other services if we cut the tax rate but he neglects to be forward thinking and take into consideration the commercial development coming down the pipe and how that retail sales tax will help offset the tax decrease. He is a true alarmist.  Do we really need an alarmist sitting up there?

Jones is a realist.  He is the only one up there with first-hand knowledge of the difficult job ahead in the next budget.  I don’t even need to go on about Bennie, because what you see is what you truly get.

Sadly, nobody commented about waste by department except Catherine Butschek who wants to do a top to bottom review of the budget.  Guess the others don’t see that as necessary.  Gee, I wonder how the other cities make ends meet?  Uh, they cut frivolous spending.  Has anyone looked at the City of Wylie’s office supply line item?  That alone is enough to make Mr. Staples think that was easy as the City pulls the wool over the taxpayer’s eyes. I mean, has any councilmember ever seen any actual receipts? Doubtful.  Talk about things that make you go hmmmmmm.

Now on to Nathan Scott.  The very name brings a certain chill to the air.  Below is a snippet of the voting record from the Collin County Elections Department.  I sorted the spreadsheet by last name and gave you the S names where the last name ‘Scott’ would appear.  Had a Mr. Nathan Scott voted since March 4 2008 through January 17th 2012, you would see his name listed there alphabetically.  As you can see, his name is nowhere to be found. A quick check of Mr. Scott’s Collin County Central Appraisal District deed date is December 26, 2006.  So let me see here, if he bought his house in December 2006 in Collin County, where did he vote in 2008 then?  He certainly didn’t vote in the 2008 presidential election which is Order #34 2008 General & Special election code 1108 on 11/04/2008 according to my sheet.  Yet in the candidate forum, Mr. Nathan Scott did state quite clearly, “I did vote in the last presidential election.”  Really?

From the paragraph above, I have established that he lied during the candidate forum when he stated that he voted in the last presidential election.  Where did he vote?  In his imagination?  While I am happy to see that the Satterwhites and the Seely’s and Susan Shuler voted, there doesn’t appear to be a Nathan Scott.  So now we get to the crux of the now infamous Nathan Scott.  Do I have to tell anyone, this is one veddy skeddy dude?

Of course I don’t really have to tell you he is not in favor of a Code of Ethics.  Well why would he be?  He stated that the vetting process during campaigning was enough.  Well one can only hope. I simply could not listen to that thing spew any more nonsense than I had to so I left during his last question.

I was told that after I left it got real fun in the closing statements.  Evidently he couldn’t keep his temper in check during Catherine’s closing statements about his desire to put forth bonds which will raise taxes, yelling at her, “That’s a lie!”  Yelling?  Really?  Don’t we have enough of that crap with Mayor Eric Hogue that we have to expect that from other potential councilmembers?  How is he going to to handle the stringent council duties along with a wife and kids and this alleged child support he claims to be paying?  Is he going to yell at people?  Worse yet hit them in the face like he struck his wife, the woman he was supposed to love and honor according to the usual marriage vows? Clearly the man has anger management issues.

I don’t even have to mention his arrest for striking his wife, or his problem paying his child support or that he has any past financial problems anymore.  I don’t even have to worry about him lying about some fictitious vote in the 2008 presidential election.  Oh no, I don’t need to even worry about those things.  As it turns out, they are completely inconsequential to his fiscal policy, or lack thereof.  The man is a freaking fiscal invalid.  He’s all, I’m a Financial Advisor, uh, well, not really as he has been unemployed since early March and in the past was known to hold down 15 jobs in 10 years, I think he took the term job hop to new heights.

He has no intention of supporting a tax cut anytime soon.  Taxpayers, you are just plumb out of luck on that one.  He wishes to support a bond.  According to his allegedly vast financial background with stockbroker and insurance sales licenses, he claims he has personal experience in municipal bond negotiations.  Hmmmm…..well we can ponder that one just a bit.  He wants a bond, even reveling in the idea of it.  I wonder, did his panties get all warm and roasty as he talked about it at the forum?  Notice that he doesn’t go on to explain that a bond will raise your taxes.  Oh no, let’s not allow that cat out of the bag.

The man wants to spend, spend, spend and as he told me in our first meeting, he wants Wylie to look like Southlake, a place he put money down on a home but it, “fell through” as he put it.  Then too, all we need do is examine his supporters.  Let’s see, there is Carter Porter, Red Byboth, Earl Newsom, former mayor Jim Swartz and wife.  The list is enough to make the newbies roll their eyes.  Then there is Mayor Eric Hogue’s claim he doesn’t ever support any one candidate publicly.  Uh right.  Publicly.  Yet the photos of the Media Hogue with Nathan Scott are ever increasing.  Uh huh.

Plain and simple, this man is so freaking liberal fiscally and socially, he makes liberals look downright conservative.
